GAUTHAM TO JOIN MANI RATNAM?

Karthik's son Gautham is ready to follow the career path of his father and grandfather Muthuraman. The star has been scouting for suitable roles, banners and directors to make his son's launch a definite success.
And the latest buzz in Kollywood is that ace director Mani Ratnam had reportedly told Karthik to wait for an announcement on his next film in which he intends to give a role to Gautham.
It may be recalled that Karthik and Mani Ratnam's association dates back to their Mouna Ragam days and they then went on to give the smash hit Agni Natchathiram. Karthik also played an important role in the recently released Raavanan.

Small is big, the ‘Happy Days’ formula

'Happy Days', a Telugu film made in a moderate budget starring mostly newcomers in lead roles, set a new trend in Tollywood. Aiming to create the same magic in Kollywood is Remo Shiva, who is making a film titled 'Kalloori Kadhal' with 'Happy Days' as its tagline.

Talking to media persons in Chennai Thursday, the debutant director said, "There is a perception in Tamil film industry that only big films could generate revenue. 'Kalloori Kadhal' would prove it wrong."

"Those making movies on small budgets are not even able to zero in on theatres to release their ventures. This trend should change and a healthy competition should prevail in Kollywood. Our film would bell the cat hopefully," he said.

On the movie, he said, "Newcomer Sukumar and popular Sandalwood actress Priyanka Chandra are playing the protagonists in this campus love story produced by Starting Point Cinema. The screenplay and climax would be totally new. We are planning to release the film in July."

Mani reacts to Amitabh’s remarks

In what can be seen as a sharp reaction to the remarks made by Amitabh Bachchan on 'Raavan', director of the film Mani Ratnam has said he is not making movies to get marks from Amitabh.

"That is his opinion. I am not bothered about it. And I am not here in the industry to get marks from Amitabh Bachchan. We have made a film after two years of hard work. Anyone can comment on it," the ace filmmaker told a Tamil weekly.

Writing on his blog recently, the Big B expressed unhappiness over the film's editing, which, according to him, ruined Abhishek's performance.

"It's sad, in the edit you only see the after-effect of that thinking process, hence inconsistent. In the edit, all the visual heads got cut and you see a confused Beera expression and wonder why?" Amitabh wrote.

"Lot of merited film edited out, causing inconsistent performance and narrative. Abhishek's erratic behaviour was due to symbolic 10 heads visually appearing and each giving him different attitudes to adopt for a situation, he would then finally shake them off and decide," he said.

The sizzling actress from Bollywood,

The sizzling actress from Bollywood, the sexy Meghna Naidu is pregnant according to a hacker. The shocked heroine had complained to the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell in Mumbai about a hacker who got her 'pregnant'.

Like every other hacker this one too breached her email account with his weird imagination and chatted with her friends, saying from Meghna's point of view that she 'was pregnant from a fling with a guy whose name she couldn't remember' and that she 'needed advice'.

But this smart fella was caught by her ex-publicist Dale Bhagwagar on the chat who sensed something fishy about the way Meghna was chatting. Immediately after the chat, Dale called her residence to verify if it was Meghna on the chat, and her parents told him, she had gone for her yoga class.

When the actress returned the call an hour later, she was shocked to learn about the conversation. Meghna said, "I was paranoid when I checked my Google chats. This imposter had been chatting with a lot my friends and claimed I was pregnant out of a fling. To add to this craziness, he wrote, I'd forgotten the name of the guy who made me pregnant. All this bogus talk was insane and scary."

Poor Meghna, it didn't stop here and when the actress-dancer complained at the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell. The cops there didn't seem to be much interested about my case but the gusty actress kept her cool and hoped that the cops will realize their duty and she hopes that they will track the hacker.

It is not safe…offline or online, these days! Better be careful from now on Meghna.

Imayamum Sigaramum Irattisuzhi Music Review

The audio of 'Rettaisuzhi' produced by Shankar's S Pictures was released by Aishwarya Rai. This Thamira directed film is about two village elders and their hilarious adventures around the village. The film is an important film as it has legendary directors who created some of the best known actors who graced Tamil film screens ever, K. Balachander and Bharathraja playing lead roles in a movie for the first time together.

Music for the film is scored by the heavily underrated Karthik Raja. The eldest son of maestro Illayaraja was expected to go places after his superb score in 'Ullasam'. But he remained unsung even after giving great music in many films like Kadhala Kadhala, Naam Iruvar Nammaku Iruvar, Dum Dum Dum, Three Roses, Album and the recent Achchamundu Achchamundu.

Karthik Raja's recent offering 'Rettaisuzhi' is as usual good for his rich orchestration and folksy melodies. 'Rettaisuzhi' reminds you still it's not time to write off this genius yet.

1. Bum Bum Bumbara Kaathu - Listen here

Singer: Rita, Violin Padma

Lyricist: Palani Bharathi

"Bum Bum Bumbara Kaathu" is a folksy melody with rich orchestration. This song will make you visualise a village in the rains both by lyric and music. Very rural in its mood this song has nice words in harmonious music. The music director makes very good use of Reverbs and the instrumentations. Gentle tinkle sounds like Jaltarang throughout is quite pleasing.

2. Pattaalam Paaruda - Listen here

Singer: Arman Mallik, Sarwan, VKS. Fowsia

Lyricist: V. Ramasamy

"Pattaalam Paaruda" is a basic tune for a song sung by village kids in chorus. We have heard many of this type in recent times. But the pace and rhythm sets this song apart from others. Very fast and peppy this song has some very good interlude BGMs. Instruments used in this song are also very down to earth. Lyric by V. Ramasamy narrates the heroic antics of village kids. Something like this was last heard in 'Anjali' by Karthik Raja's father.

3. Naan Endru Sol - Listen here

Singer: Hariharan, Haricharan, Sriram Parthasarathy

Lyricist: Chandra

"Naan Endru Sol" is a slow number in which the hero remembers his father. Chandra' nice words amply complimented with slow beats. You have a better version coming up.

4. Poochandi Kannazhagi - Listen here

Singer: Belly Raj, Rita

Lyricist: Annamalai

"Poochandi Kannazhagi" is a fast beat romantic number. Karthik Raja has tried to bring contemporary popular music to the fore with his classical touch. The peppy number rendered by Rita and Belly Raj, has some interesting lyrics and good instrumentations with some traditional flavour. You feel a villupattu style of story telling in this.

5. Para Para Kili - Listen here

Singer: Rahul Nambiar, Deepa Mariam

Lyricist: Palani Bharathi

Pick of the lot. "Para Para Kili" is a soothing number with really good vocals by Deepa Mariam and Rahul Nambiar. This song is well paced and places where the vocals not accompanied with instruments make it appealing.

6. Poochandi Kannazhagi - Listen here

Singer: Hariharan, Shreya Ghoshal

Lyricist: Annamalai

Top of the album. This "Poochandi Kannazhagi" version sung by Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal is a shade better than the earlier version just because of the great voices of Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal. This song reveals the versatility of Shreya Ghoshal once again. The way she sings this village fast romantic number in no less than a kuthu rendition. With good promotions this song will top the charts for more time.

7. Naan Endru Sol - Listen here

Singer: Hariharan

Lyricist: Chandra

Another version sung by Hariharan. Hari elevates this song with his honey voice and right pull and push at right places.

On the whole 'Rettaisuzhi' by Karthik Raja is good overall. All the songs remind of the good times of his father in the eighties. That's' nothing wrong because he takes inspirations only from his father. One thing we again we wish to impress after hearing this album is that if given right chances this introvert music director will go places like his brother Yuvan Shankar Raja but on a different melody pedestal.

‘Sura’ has music scored by Mani Sharma

Ilaya Thalapathi Vijay's 50th movie 'Sura' has music scored by Mani Sharma, the man who is supposedly busy with Telugu and Tamil projects. Perhaps being busy, has left him with little time that he has used the tunes of the best of his Telugu hits in this album.

The music will be a delight to the fans of Vijay with a few mass numbers that might excite them and imagining Vijay dancing to the tunes, it will be a visual treat at the theatres.

Mani Sharma has used four lyricists that include veteran Vaali, Na. Muthukumar, Kabilan and Snehan, who all have done a decent job keeping in mind Vijay's mass image.

1. Thanjavoor Jillakkari - Listen here

Singers: Hemachandra and   Saindhavi

Lyricist: Na. Muthukumar

A youthful and fast song that will definitely match Vijay's dancing talent. The humming at the back is hum-worthy and will echo in your mind. Hemachandra and Saindhavi add that essential pep in this duet. A noticeable point in the song is the usage of the chorus and the humming in between verses. The beats might remind you of a few songs composed by Mani Sharma before. And just like the trend would be, a few English words in the lyrics have been penned by Muthukumar, making this number youthful.

2. Vetri Kdi Yeathu - Listen here

Singers: Ranjith and Mukesh

Lyricist: Vaali, S.P. Raajakumar

The song starts of with a composition that conveys a symbol of victory or achievement and then the song has a short stanza talking about the hero. This song is probably this introduction. With a steady tempo, Mani Sharma has used the percussions to good effect, with a catchy tune and the humming of the chorus. Ranjith's voice is bright as usual and his Tamil diction is flawless. Vaali's lyrics talk about the hero's attitude towards life and the society.

3. Vanga Kadal Ellai - Listen here

Singers: Naveen and Maladhi Lakshmanan

Lyricist: Kabilan

This is a mass number with folk beats and a quintessential Vijay movie song. Nothing really in this song will entertain you. Even the lyrics won't find your attention and you may even feel déjà vu listening to the music.

4. Siragadikkum Nilavu - Listen here

Singers: Karthik and Reeta

Lyrics: Snehan

All movie albums these days look like having at least one song with Karthik singing and this song satisfies that craving. A fast paced melodious song between the hero and the heroine, with lyrics about love. The music by Mani Sharma in this one is just another average fare composition. Except for Karthik and Reeta's voice, nothing is praiseworthy in this song.

5. Thamizhan Veera Thamizhan - Listen here

Singer: Rahul Nambiar

Lyricist: Kabilan

"Thamizhan Vera Thamizhan…" starts of with a catchy tune and Rahul Nambiar's voice adds energy to this song. This is basically a paean talking about the hero's dynamism. With some excellent humming and percussions, this song might see its way in the background of the movie.

6. Naan Nadanthal Adhiradi - Listen here

Singer: Naveen, Shoba Chandrasekar, Janani Madhan

Lyricist: Kabilan

Another hit tune in a recent Telugu movie, Mani Sharma has used the tune effectively for the Tamil version. This song is sung by Naveen, Janani and Vijay's mother Shoba Chandrasekar. The song starts of with some excellent 'string' work and continues with drums that make it a semi-fast song. The string composition is used skillfully in between as well. In between verses, the fillers are just about average and include English lyrics. Lyrics by Kabilan talk about the praises, both the hero and heroine exchange. Over all, a catchy tune.

All in all, as the movie would demand, this album is a mass entertainer that will entertain Vijay's enormous fan base. Though a few numbers entertain, this album is just above mediocre.

Kutrappirivu Movie Review

A cop story made with a purpose always attracted audience. And actors who have gone on to don khaki have made it big on silver screen. Combining both is 'Kuttrappirivu', which has made Srikanth and Prithviraj join the long list of heroes who have ventured to police roles.

'Kuttrappirivu', directed by Manmohan, showcases police officers in a different light. Their life style, sacrifice and dedication to excel in their job have been picturised in an elegant manner, though repeated scenes of raw violence frighten the audience.

The director has ensured that the screenplay is racy and crispy. At the same time, one could not avoid the feel that he was inspired heavily by Goutham Vasudev Menon's films like 'Khaakha Khaakha' and 'Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu', which carried a similar theme.

The film, which is the Tamil version of Telugu movie 'Police Police', talks about two cops Ravidass (Srikanth) and Ravikanth (Prithviraj). Their conflicting interests and their missions to achieve big make up the story. The movie boasts of huge star cast that includes Kamalinee Mukherjee, Sanjana, Kadhal Dhandapani among others.

Ravidass is a young and dynamic Assistant Commissionr of Police. A fearless honest cop, he is admired and adored by everyone in the department.

His deputy Ravikanth is extremely opposite to him. He is selfish and greedy. He hires goons and manages to kill ultras and wins accolades from his higher authorities. Also he does a series of murders for personal gains.

Meanwhile a flashback reveals that Ravidass had lost his family due to greedy acts of a senior police officer and hence he takes a vow to come and clean the system and punish evil police officers. He finds out that all is not well with Ravikanth and follows him. They are pitted against each other. Who eventually wins forms the crux.

Srikanth is impressive as a stylish cop. His body language is good. He has managed to give a good performance with stylish outfits. Equally hogging the limelight is Prithviraj. It needs tremendous guts for a frontline actor like a Prithvi to do a negative role. He plays a typical baddie and does come out with one of his best.

Bharani's cinematography is good. The lens has captured the runs and chases' well. Vishwa's music has a couple of melodies. Produced by Green Apple, 'Kuttrappirivu' is an engrossing movie. But a sense of watching a dubbed movie takes away the sheen.

Magane En Marumagane Movie Review

Director T P Gajendran, who emerged from the stable of Visu, is known for churning out family sentiments, but laced with humour. His 'Magane En Marumaganae', presented by Raj Television network, is no different.

Starring Vivek, Nasser and Saranya in pivotal roles, the movie dwells about happenings in a 'Jameen' family. A beaten-to-bush story has been given a melo-dramatic treatment by the director.

The major USP of the movie is Vivek, who plays his usual. He comes with his 'coterie' to tickle the funny bone playing the title role of Marumagan (son-in-law). Young Mithun Tejaswi plays the son.

The eyesore is the clichéd storyline and poor characterisation. The director seems to have loosely etched few characters, which fail to make desired impact on screen.

Jameendar of Singam Patti village (Nasser) and his wife (Saranya) lead a happy life. They are known for their generosity and are adored by the villagers. They have a son Raghu (Mithun) and a daughter Ponnarasi (Yamini Sharma).

Raghu studies in a boarding school and gets educated to find an IT job in Chennai. Meanwhile in the village there is Singaram (Vivek), a fit-for-nothing fellow. He is crazy behind Jameendar's property and wants to tie the knot to Ponnarasi.

He enacts a drama and manages to marry Ponnarasi. But he cannot correct his ways. As a result, he ends up earning the wrath of the family. All hell breaks loose when Singaram is arrested for a murder, which he has not committed.

Meanwhile, Raghu is tempted by his uncle (Livingston) (who is behind his property) to marry one of his daughters. However, it is Thenmozhi (Thenmozhi), a sincere and good-looking servant in his family who impresses Raghu.

Fate takes a turn and Jameendar's family drowns in debt and forced to go out of the palace. In the meantime, Singaram and his wife come to Chennai and he corrects his ways, works hard and becomes rich.

On his return to Singampatti, he finds out that all is not well between Jameendar and his son Raghu. He embarks on a mission to reunite them. Eventually he saves his in-laws family from danger.

Vivek comes all through the film. As usual he impresses with his one-liners and punches. He romances and even dances to a fast paced song. In the first half one sees a comical Vivek, while the latter half shows him more serious and sedate. The actor could have cut down on double - meaning dialogues.

Nasser is impressive as a dotting father and Saranya gets a meaty role. Mithun looks cool. But the rest of characters have been stitched artificially. Director Gajendran appears towards the climax.

Dheena's music is loud and there is a remix of yesteryear hit 'Raman Aandalaum Ravanan Aandalum...' Raja Rajan handles cinematography and his capturing of the village is okay.

On the whole, 'Magane En Marumaganae' is a family fare quite different from run-of-the-mill-stuff. But a sense of watching a drama prevails as the film progresses.

Goripalayam Movie Review

A lot was expected from Rasu Madhuravan in 'Goripalayam', as he enthralled the family audiences with the feel-good entertainer 'Mayandi Kudumbathar'. But he has let down the fans coming up with a gory tale.

For, 'Goripalayam' is full of violence with blood spilling on the screen. The movie is nothing but a group of men running around with sickles and aruvals and interestingly there is no police anywhere. And Madurai has been portrayed as a violent and bloodbath town.

Though there are many emotional scenes in the movie, all gets missed with the filmmaker giving more thrust on violent scenes. Especially the second half is full of chase and stunts and in almost every reel a murder happens. The movie's theme seems to have been borrowed heavily from 'Subramaniapuram' and 'Renigunta'.

The film essentially talks about a group of youngsters, who goes on the wrong side of their lives, and eventually try to correct them. But the obstacles that they face once they try to reform is all what 'Goripalayam' is about.

As the title suggests, the whole movie is set in Goripalayam, a neighborhood in Madurai. The director has cast a group of youngsters in the lead roles besides a few filmmakers who worked in his previous films.

In a bid to get detailing of the Madurai town right, the director has missed out on the screenplay. Scenes unfold in a hurry and there are enough deaths, murders, chase and stunt sequences that makes you squirm in your seats.

Azhagar (Harish), son of a police constable, is tempted to take bad habits seeing his father in his younger days. Azhagar along with his friends A to Z (Ramakrishnan) Azhagappa (Manivannan) and Inippu Murugan (Prakash) lead a callous life smoking ganja all time.

They incur the wrath of everyone though they are good-hearted and ready to help others. Fate comes in the form of rich and influential Kazhuvanadhan's (Alex) family. His sons Karutha Pandi (Nandha Periyasamy) and Viruman (Ravi Maria) are feared by everyone.

The brothers mistake their sister of falling in love with Azhagar and kills her. They cover it up as suicide. Now they go behind Azhagar. But sequence of events leaves Kazhuvanathan dead and the blame falls on the four friends.

In a bid to take revenge on them, Viruman hires a contract killer Pandi (Vikranth), who is in the business only to educate his young brother. Whats happens after this forms the climax. It is gore and bloodshed all the way.

Ramakrishna, Harish and Vikranth have good screen space while Poongodi and Swasika do their part well. Singam Puli does an extension of what he did in 'Mayandi... ' Ravi Maria and Nandha Periyasamy are too loud.

Sabesh Murali's background score and Balabharani's camera work worth a mention. Had Rasu Madhuravan concentrated more on screenplay and cut down those needless violent scenes, 'Goripalayam' could have been a better fare.

Kola Kolaya Mundhirikka - Lovely laughathon

After touching a serious theme in her maiden venture 'Vallamai Tharayo', director Madhumitha has taken to comedy in 'Kola Kolaya Mundhirikka'. With Crazy Mohan at the helm of affairs (penning the script), Madhumitha has succeeded in achieving her objective- providing fun and laughter.

Comedy is not an easy task and it takes a team to deliver their best to evoke laughter. Crazy Mohan has proved in the past that he with his pen possessing the skills to give flesh and blood to such genre of movies. And 'KKM' is no different.

If half the battle of Madhumitha is won after she managed to have Crazy Mohan in her team, the rest of the race was easily run by her thanks to having the likes of Jayaram, M S Baskar, Delhi Ganesh besides Karthik in the cast. The seasoned artistes understood their characters and played it with consummate ease.

The movie begins in a Zameendar family on a Krishna Jayanthi day. Fate has it that the owners are killed and the rich diamonds in a royal chair go missing. An employee in the Zameen (Delhi Ganesh) knows the whereabouts of the chair.

Meanwhile years pass by. Enters Krish (Karthik Kumar) and Veni (Shikha). They are cons involved in small thefts. Krishna comes to know about the diamonds from Delhi Ganesh and begins his search.

One Veerappan (Anand Raj), who in a way related to the Zameen, goes behind the property with his team. More confusion begins as Police Inspector Mathrubootham (Jayaram) and his aide Vyapuri come in search of details of a Swiss bank account hidden in a chip. What happens when all these men come across each other?

All credits to the star cast of the movie who bring the roof down in laughter. The dialogue delivery by Karthik and his body language is okay. Shikha is impressive. M S Baskar, Delhi Ganesh and Anand Raj are portrayed in a new light on screen. But walking with applause is Jayaram.

Crazy Mohan is at his full flow. His good clean humour is the highlight. The one-liners, which can be enjoyed with family, deserves appreciation. Music by Selva Ganesh is good. On the whole, it is a fun-filled summer ride that is sure to provide laughter.

Raavanan Movie Review - Ten Faced Persona

Mani Ratnam returns to spread magic (or a blunder, as this review progresses) with his 'Raavanan' after a splendid show in the form of 'Guru'. Well lets be positive to some extent now, his team is world class, with Santosh Sivan behind the lens, Srikar Prasad on the editor's table and A R Rahman handling the music and besides that the stellar star cast! The movie looked like a bouquet of flowers but only the fragrance seemed to fade!

'Raavanan' is cinematic brilliance. Watch the movie without expectations and watch it for what it has to offer rather than searching for what you want! It is a celluloid adaptation of 'Ramayana' written by sage Valmiki (and interestingly, no name is displayed for 'the story' when the titles are showed.) with modern publicity techniques that will attract the audience. Let's get to the analysis part and wrap this review up as soon as possible, because the movie is just above 2 hours. And about wrapping it soon, anyone among the audience will tell you to get out of the hall as soon as possible once the movie is over!

Mani Ratnam, the master of creating art on celluloid has possibly over worked to not reach the hype! He is class apart no doubt but his class on screen is visible only in parts. He has delicately portrayed bits and pieces of modern day Ramayana. Well nothing offending here but Ramayana is a story that is imbibed in to our lives from childhood, seems like this movie was shot to associate every scene with the happenings in the holy epic.

Characterisation and Performances

Suhasini Maniratnam pens the dialogues of the movie. Her dialogues are intelligent, credible and most importantly, conveying information. Characters and their strengths are informed through these wonderful dialogues. The homework seems to have been done well. Mani Ratnam has sketched his characters amazingly. Every character has a purpose and every actor behind the character has been rightly cast. . Leave alone the fact he was inspired from Ramayana but here in this, the Raavanan is the hero. The title role is played by Vikram (like you didn't know). He is Veera alias Veeraiah. A tribal leader who's fighting for their rights. He is strong, genuine and loyal to his tribe. Even other characteristics of his are mentioned through an enquiry scene where the police talk to the tribals to find out what kind of a person this Veera is. Vikram's performance is simply electric.

The next in line is Prithvi Raj, who's the dynamic Superintendent of Police. He is oozing with confidence as an actor and his chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is good enough on screen. He makes it quite obvious as being the Rama in this story. So you know the strings attached.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's characterization is simple. She is a loving wife who has been abducted (did we leak the story now?) and her expressions from thereon are simply amazing. She is beautiful on screen (sure is) and has come out with a noticeably extraordinary performance. Only a certain part of the credit goes to her, the rest goes to Mani for getting the best out of her.

The other supporting characters like Karthik( apparently Hanuman) as a forest officer, Prabhu as Vikram's older brother, Munna as Vikram's younger brother and others are impressively handled characters. The director has made sure all the characters receive the deserved importance. Mani Ratnam is the master unarguably; he has made sure the actors have their presence felt on screen.

At this predicament of the review, Priya Mani as Vikram's step sister has done a commendable job. Her character as a bold sister to the strong brother is much appreciable. Her performance will definitely be applauded and as she's playing the same role in the Hindi version, she has made an excellent start in her Bollywood journey.

Technicalysis

Technically speaking, Editor Srikar Prasad has sharp scissors. The screenplay in the first half, though nothing has been conveyed and is an utter waste of film reels, his editing is near precision. Stunts and bomb work by Peter Heines and Shyam Kaushal deserve appreciation and so is art director Sameer's work, given the fact that most of the movie was shot in and around water. The tribal village, the police camp, a bridge and a marriage set were simply amazing and he would be one technician to make note of. The fight on the bridge just before the climax is an edge-of-the-seat scene that has been well shot and well directed.

But there is one man who will be applauded for his work (perhaps the only respite in the movie) is Santosh Sivan and his camera work! Mani's movies always have natural lighting and Santosh has used it to good effect. Green pastures, water falls, rivers, trees, and all that nature can offer in a forest are radiantly shown. Hats off Santosh, you've done a splendid job!

Winding up this section, A R Rahman's music is classy. His tribal beats merge with the movie's theme. His rerecording could have been better but nevertheless, a great show! Hard work from cast and crew is evident in the movie, given that the movie was shot under incessant rain, blood sucking leeches etc, but what does it count for?

The Minuses

The list of minuses is being reduced with a lot of deliberation. Mani Ratnam has pictured beautiful movies in the past. 'Raavanan' was termed his magnum opus, etc but sorry it didn't seem like one. The screenplay was a let down with only few scenes showing his directing supremacy. He has done another 'Roja' with only Aishwarya replacing Arvind Swamy and a few minor alterations. The movie was lost somewhere. May be because the first half was a major let down and the second half carried a lot to show (or burden) the audience.

IndiaGlitz Verdict

'Raavanan' is for those who appreciate quality cinema ingredients. Director's touch, camera, art, etc are prominent yet something is missing. Don't look for the plot; it is quite obvious (from the trailers). Watch it for Mani Ratnam's direction expertise, Vikram's performance, Aishwarya's beauty and the beautiful locations!  This was branded Mani's best movie by a few but on second thought, the master's best is yet to come.

Kalavani - Confident Folk for the story

Sherali Films 'Kalavani' is produced by S Nazir, a former production executive of Mani Ratnam. The film is directed by debutante Sargunam, an erstwhile associate of director Vijay. Produced by the assistant of a classic film maker and directed by the assistant of a modern stylish director 'Kalavani' is expected to have the finesse of the mentors.

'Pasanga' fame Vimal and a new comer Oviya play the young lead pair in 'Kalavani'. Director Sargunam has said "Kalavani will be a right mix of romance and comedy, quite like Pandiarajan's 'Aaan Paavam'.

'Kalavani' music is composed by S S Kumaran who has given a hit in 'Poo' earlier.

The audio of 'Kalavani' was launched on April 19th at the popular Kamala Theatre complex in Chennai. Director Mani Ratnam released the first copy and director-actor M Sasikumar received it.

"Kalavani' has seven numbers for the record. But four numbers are very short, each lasting for about one-and-a-half minutes, which says the film director and music director cared for the story and the flow of it. They didn't want to have a song for the sake of having it. They preferred the positioning of the right music at the right place. An unusual thing. Congrats for that.

1. Oru Murai Iru Murai - Listen here

Singers: Harish Ragavendra, Srimathumitha, Srimathi

A folksy romantic number with good blend of local sounds. It opens with a folk violin and then the male voice prelude. The singers Harish Ragavendra, Srimathumitha, Srimathi actually lift up this folksy tune. Although Harish sounds little urban for this song be manages with his melody. Rural dream well captured in both the lyric and the rhythms. The actual song begins 'Chinna Chinna Thooral Vanthu Nenjukulle Muthamidum Maayam Amayam Enna Enna Solli Poduda' says a lot about Na. Muthukumar. Simple strings and wind interludes match well. The females' harmony is also note worthy. This has all ingredients for staying long on the charts.

2. Pada Pada Padavena - Listen here

Singer: Yash Golcha

This is a likeable shortie. Asking for the hand of the girl but the emotions could have been better.

3. Peancha Mazhai - Listen here

Singer: A. Devendran

Another short and sweet folk song. Very simple use of siruparai and kottu and the musician gives importance to vocal also. Very rhythmic beats. The bronzy voice of Devendran is a welcome addition to folk singing.

4. Sinthaiyiley - Listen here

Singer: Prasanna

Starts with an oriental feel and retains it throughout. Prasanna exudes a charm in Sinthayile.

5. Dubaikku Poga Porene - Listen here

Singer: Ranjith, Uma

The protagonists must be dreaming Dubai rich. Dubaikku poga porene is basic and settled with even some Arabic desert rhythms in it. This is a new kind of kuthu song with down to earth thoughts.

6. Ooradangum Samathiley - Listen here

Singer: Senthilvelan

Ooradangum Samathiley looks a reminiscent number. Senthilvelan has a pleasant trace of Illayaraja and his style of pathos.

7. Edakku Madakku - Listen here

Singer: S S. Kumaran

Another short tune sung by the music director himself. Sounds like a theme rendition.

On the whole the songs of 'Kalavani' are breezy to let your imagination fly for a title like 'Kalavani'. May be a couple of more regular duration songs could have made this a complete album. Even then the song 'Oru Murai Iru Murai' is the pick and a must hear.

Baana Kaathadi - Yuvan flies high

Baana Kaathadi is the latest venture of Sathyajothi Films after the clean family entertainer 'Jayam Kondaan'. The movie launches actor Murali's son Adharva who pairs up with another debutante in Tamil Samantha who has acted in 'Ye Maaya Chesave' the Telugu version of 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaya'. Prasanna plays an important role and Karunaas is the comedian.

The film is written and directed by Badri Venkatesh and produced by Sathyajothi Films' Senthil Thyagarajan and T Arjun. The audio of 'Baana Kaathadi' was released on 30 April at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai.

Baana Kaathadi's music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The album features 5 songs and interestingly 4 of them are solo numbers. Two are written by Na. Muthukumar and Vaali, Snehan and Gangai Amaran have written each one song. However the album doesn't feature the remix of the 'Aathadi Paavadai' from 'Poovilangu', Murali's debut film as reported by media earlier.

The film is advertised as a 'Yuvan Shankar Raja Musical' and there are reasons for that.

1. Thaakkuthe - Listen here

Singer: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Lyricist: Vaali

Conforming to Singer Yuvan's genre, Thaakkuthe is his usual tune. But surprisingly no major instrumentation except the for base drum beats. Bass drum background beats are racier than his usual. Yuvan has relied on simple beats and as a master he handles them well. It works folks. Yuvan knows what we want. Repeated listening will make it a bigger hit. An ARR trait? Pick of the pack.

2. Oru Paithiyam Pidikudhu - Listen here

Singer: Karthik

Lyricist: Na. Muthukumar

With funky beats Singer Karthik has tried 'Oru Paithiyam Pidikudhu' in a new voice. The pace is also differently slow when compared to usual Yuvan pace for this kind of romantic solos. Again here there is no big orchestration. Simple piano takes the song through. Intermittent male harmony and the female humming is a value addition.

3. Kuppathu Rajakal - Listen here

Singers: Haricharan, Rahul Nambiar, Sathyan

Lyricist: Snehan

A street smart song with some 'Pattiyal' hangover.  The young boys of North Chennai singing in their elements. Snehan who is an expert of this kind of 'pettai' numbers has done even better. Nicely matched.

4. En Nenjil - Listen here

Singer: Sadhana Sargam

Lyricist: Na. Muthukumar

Sadhana Sargam's "En Nenjil" is another romantic solo from the girl's perspective. Flutes, violins and strings accompaniments are all great. Sometimes the soft voice of Sadhana Sargam is over powered by the music.

5. Ullara Poondhu - Listen here

Singer: Roshini

Lyricist: Gangai Amaran

This may be an item song to impress the front benchers. Yuvan has not tried too much for this song, yet it has not stooped to routine level. Only this song has used maximum instruments in thee entire album. Gangai Amaran has proved he can write item masala song even for the present generation. Roshini's vocal fits perfectly for the genre.

One striking thing in this album is that the orchestration and instrumentation in all songs is very minimal which is not Yuvan. You may even feel the album has traces of his earlier films like 'Sarvam' and 'Siva Manasula Sakthi' but it intelligently catered for the tastes of young generations. There are no ritzy beats either. The album may not be have the Yuvan trade marks but strikes you differently. After listening to consecutive chartbusters from Yuvan like 'Goa' and 'Paiyaa' this may take you by surprise. But…Forget Yuvan's recent films and listen to the songs of 'Baana Kaathadi' fresh. Surely you will like them.

Hari talks about his next

Not just his films, but Hari too is fast. With his last release 'Singam' successfully crossing 25 days in cinema halls and reports claiming 'record collections', the director is getting ready for his next venture.

The film will bring together the success pair of 'Padikadhavan', Dhanush and Tamannah, once again. Rajkiran will play a pivotal role while Devi Sri Prasad, whose songs for 'Singam' are topping the charts, will score the music.

Says Hari, "The film will be a complete action entertainer set in the backdrop of Sivaganga. Though the movie will have a lot of stunt scenes, they will not defy logic and will fit to Dhanush's image."

He adds: "The yet –to-be titled film will go to floors by the end of August. I am planning to work with cinematographer Priyan again but everything depends on 'Velayudham' starring Vijay, since he has been roped in to work for the movie".

Everything will be right Hari! All the best!

I am not a director: Cheran

"The director in me will not come out while working for 'Yudham Sei'. Because I very well know any kind of interference could affect a filmmaker's creativity", says Cheran, who is playing the lead role in the movie directed by Mysskin.

He adds: "I have complete confidence on Mysskin. So I comfortably forget the fact that I am a filmmaker when working with him. So there is no question of director Cheran interfering in Mysskin's work."

On how he landed up playing the protagonist in an action movie, Cheran says, "It all happened when I approached producer Kalpathi S Aghoram for my forthcoming directorial venture 'Adhutha Thalaimurai'."

"Before starting the project, he wanted me to play the lead role in 'Yudham Sei'. Though I had apprehensions playing a CB-CID officer, Mysskin convinced me saying the film is about a cool cop who would not display heroism but intelligence."

Mani Ratnam’s interpretation of ‘Ramayanam’

Even as a controversy is brewing over Mani Ratnam's interpretation of 'Ramayanam' in his recent release 'Raavanan', the director has said he never wanted to glorify Raavanan, the villain of the epic, in his film.

"My movie is about a mighty man whose behaviour is due to different attitudes that strike his mind to adopt for a situation. It's like 10 different persons sitting inside one man. Hence the title", the ace filmmaker clarified.

Meanwhile, Bollywood veteran Mahesh Bhatt came to the support of Amitabh Bachchan, who expressed unhappiness over the editing of the film's Hindi version 'Raavan' which has his son Abhishek Bachchan in the lead.

"A dad is a dad is a dad. Who else would come out but a father to protect his son from fires of perceived failure?" the filmmaker said. In the meantime, amidst reports that the movie has bombed at the box office, distributor Reliance Big Pictures has claimed that the film has grossed Rs 53 crore worldwide with in three days of its release.
